The main-destination rule

Which country should you apply to?

Applying to the wrong consulate is one of the most common — and most avoidable — reasons an application is refused.

01

One country only

Apply to that country. Straightforward.

02

Several countries

Apply to the one where you will spend the most nights.

03

Equal nights

Apply to the country you enter first on the trip.

A short-stay Schengen visa allows up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the whole area. It is not a work permit, and it does not cover Ireland or Cyprus, which are not Schengen members.
